About company / History

POLDIM Joint-Stock Company, on the one hand, carries on a fifty-year-old operation of Polish road and bridge building enterprises located in the Tarnów region. On the other, it considers itself to be the heir to the rich tradition of road and bridge building in the Lesser Poland region, and in former Galicia. The company in its present shape was created on February 18, 2006.

  • 1775 – Maria Theresa, the Empress of Austria-Hungary, sets up the General Authority for Road Building in Galicia and Lodomeria. Jan Gross becomes its President and during 40 years of his tenure he leaves his mark on the history of Galician road building.
  • 1777 – The first modern bridge is built over the river San near Przemyśl. It is 160 meters long and is supported by three stone pillars.
  • 1778 – The first road act of law is passed, which „makes it obligatory for serfs living within two miles of the road to work on it.”
  • 1780-1790 – The famous Vienna Route, also known as the Emperor’s Road is built. It links Lviv with Biała, and runs through Tarnów.
  • 1817 – Roads are divided into two categories: main trade and post routes versus other roads of lesser importance for the country. Since then, every road is named.
  • 18181823 – In a difficult mountainous terrain a Subcarpathian route is built. It links Maków, Nowy Sącz, Jasło, Sanok and Sambor.
  • 1824 – The government abolishes the obligation to maintain roads by residents of nearby villages. The maintenance works are to be done by different contractors and paid for by the State.
  • 1866 – The Road Act is passed by the Autonomous State Parliament of Galicia, which divides roads into national, county and district roads.
  • 1907 – Another Road Act introduces so called county funds and local road funds, which are supposed to cover the costs of road building and maintenance.
  • 19241926 – A wooden bridge over the Vistula River is built near Szczucin. A new iron bridge built in its place maintained its characteristic shape known to all drivers taking that route.
  • 1927 – An impressive and high ferroconcrete viaduct is built in Grybów.
  • 1927 – The Polish Parliament passes a law concerning the country’s development. It provides for financing operations and credits for the construction industry. It also introduces substantial tax deductions for construction companies.
  • 1928 – The first Executive Order concerning a building code is issued by the President of independent Poland.
  • 1952 – As a result of an Act passed by the Presidium of the Government, the Regional Office for the Maintenance of Public Roads is established in Tarnów (REDP – Rejon Eksploatacji Dróg Publicznych).
  • 1968 – The first in Poland Asphalt Emulsions Plant is built within the structures of REDP.
  • 1975 – Due to new administrative division, REDP is closed down. The Regional Office for Public Roads in Tarnów (RDP – Rejon Dróg Publicznych) takes its place.
  • 1985 – RDP establishes The Museum of Road Technology Monuments in Szczucin.
  • 1992 – RDP is divided into two separate entities: The Road Administration of the General Directorate of Public Roads in Kraków (Zarząd Dróg Generalnej Dyrekcji Dróg Publicznych), and the Road and Bridge Building Company in Tarnów (PBDiM - Przedsiębiorstwo Budowy Dróg i Mostów).
  • 19941998 – PBDiM builds a beltway south of Tarnów.
  • 1996 – PBDiM, which develops rapidly, begins a series of road works all around Poland.
  • 1999 – In accordance with the directive issued by the Voivode of Lesser Poland, PBDiM is privatized and takes on the name of the Road and Bridge Building Company, Joint-Stock Company (PBDiM S.A.).
  • 2005 – PBDiM S.A. changes its name to Polish Roads and Bridges, Joint-Stock Company in Tarnów (Polskie Drogi i Mosty Spółka Akcyjna).
  • February 18, 2006 – On an Extraordinary Board of Stockholders Meeting, the name of the company is changed to POLDIM, Joint-Stock Company (POLDIM Spółka Akcyjna).
  • December 2009 – July 2010 – after selling shares of the company, POLDIM becomes the property and the part of Lithuanian TILTRA group.
